X-ray Tells You What. XPAS Tells You Where. That’s the Difference That Matters.

X-ray Tells You What. XPAS Tells You Where. That’s the Difference That Matters.

Vidisco XPAS system with: Paladin Panel, X-ray source, optical camera, and tablet controller

There’s a moment every EOD technician knows. You’ve taken the X-ray. The image is clear- wires, a power source, components that need to be dealt with. You know what’s in there.

Then comes the harder question: where, exactly on the outside of this object, do I place the shot?

That gap- between the image and the action- is where render-safe procedures get complicated. And it’s exactly what Vidisco’s XPAS was built to close.

The Old Way Worked. Until It Didn’t.

For years, the standard approach was the Grid Aim method. Place a physical reference grid against the object. Take an X-ray. Read the component positions in the grid. Do the math. Carry the calculation downrange and position the disruptor by hand.

Skilled technicians became very good at this. But “very good at a manual process” still means exposure- multiple downrange approaches to verify positioning, time on target, and judgment calls made under pressure, close to the device.

The system worked. The question was always whether it could work better.

A Patent Built on a Simple Idea: Let the System Do the Math

XPAS – Vidisco’s patented X-Ray Precision Aiming Solution – flips the equation. Instead of the operator translating image data into physical coordinates, the system does it automatically.

XPAS captures an X-ray and an optical photograph of the object simultaneously. The system then automatically aligns, scales, orients, and fuses the two into a single Augmented Reality overlay. What appears on screen is the real object, with its internal components shown in their exact physical positions relative to the exterior surface.

No mental projection. No coordinate math. A clear picture of where everything is- before anyone goes near it.

VEO software: AR overlay showing X-ray content fused over the optical image

The targeting system then generates the precise firing solution for the disruptor based on that fused image. The operator identifies the target component. The system handles the geometry.

This is the core of what earned Vidisco the patent – not just displaying two images together, but automatically achieving the spatial alignment that makes the overlay accurate enough to fire on.

What This Looks Like in Practice

The XPAS is designed to render an IED safe within as little as two manual approaches.

First approach: emplace the system. From that point, image capture, target identification, and aiming all happen from the safe area.

Second approach: swap the X-ray generator for the disruptor, confirm, and fire.

The precision work- the part that used to demand experience, spatial judgment, and repeated downrange visits- now happens on a screen, from a safe distance.

Built for Real EOD Work

XPAS works with Vidisco’s Guardian and Paladin X-ray systems, integrates with the standard Grid Aim Kit, and is fully XTK compatible. It operates from bright sunlight to complete darkness — because real call-outs don’t come with controlled lighting.

The system doesn’t make decisions for the technician. It removes the manual translation step that used to sit between the technician’s judgment and the shot. That’s not a small thing when the shot has to count.
